Carl Guarnieri - Recreation Director |
What proved to be a very hot and sunny summer went by too quickly. The outdoor pool, park and playground had record numbers of people taking advantage of them, but now the focus shifts to fall and fall activities.
We have two “Royal Balls” set for the little princesses in our city on September 12 and November 7.
Our Sunday adult dances pick up again with dances scheduled for September 19, October 17 and November 21.
The senior afternoon dances continue once a week; contact Senior Services Coordinator Janet Shugar at (440) 234-2255 x1409 for details on dances and other fall senior activities (including a health fair, bus trips and computer classes).
Need a space for a special family event? Contact Pam Unger or Loretta Krumheuer at (440) 234-2255 x1407. Our rental facilities are first class and our staff is ready to help make the event truly special. Planning a birthday party for that special youngster? Contact Mary Marando at extension 1403; we have several options that include a room and time in the pool.
The Middleburg Heights Community Center is also being proactive in the national effort to become more healthy and fight obesity. Our “Healthy Heights Wellness” program is a 6-week monitored program designed for adults and seniors who want to begin or continue a healthy lifestyle. We also offer an introductory class on our cardiovascular fitness equipment for youth ages 12-14. In addition you will begin to see healthier options in our concession stands.
You will find details on all this and much more by looking through our website. As always if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us.
Sincerely,
Carl Guarnieri
Recreation Director
Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide people of all ages and ability the opportunity to participate in active and passive, individual and team, competitive and non-competitive programs. Through our community recreational and leisure activities, we strive to:
- Foster community spirit through friendship and teamwork.
- Teach the fundamentals of fitness, exercise and sport.
- Instill the concepts of pride, motivation and sportsmanship in all participants.
Our vision is to become a model for other recreation departments throughout Greater Cleveland and Ohio. We will do this by offering dynamic programs, using professionally certified instructors and providing progressive, state-of-the-art facilities, which will fully serve the needs of our citizens.
Our Award-Winning Facility
In August 2001 the Middleburg Heights Community Center was featured in USA Today as one example of upscale facilities that are redefining the concept of community recreation centers.
This came as no surprise to residents. After all, the center had already been named Most Outstanding New Center by the Ohio Parks & Recreation Association a few months after its May 2000 opening.
Today the center continues to provide the best in public recreation facilities. It includes:

The heated indoor pool features a pleasing free-form design with a lazy-current channel, bubble couch, vortex, hot tub/whirlpool spa, waterslide, and an area for lap swimming. A separate whirlpool, steam room and sauna are also available.
The heated outdoor pool includes a waterslide and a variety of other play features with areas no deeper than 3-1/2 ft. (perfect for little ones).
Our spacious fitness area has close to 100 pieces of cardio, circuit training and free weight equipment. A four-lane, non-banked, 1/12 mile track offers a view of the pools, gymnasiums and casual activities area.
The casual activities area is a meeting place for everyone. With views to almost every activity area, it is the "hub" of the center. Features include a 60 ft. waterfall (which hides the elevator quite well), a grand staircase, and a skylight. At 5,000 sq. ft., it accommodates large gatherings nicely.
