The Recreation Department offers a variety of programs, activities & special events for the entire family, from children to senior citizens.

Our annual Miss Middleburg Heights pageant will be held on Saturday, June 23 at Midpark High School at 3 pm aspart of our Summer -in-the-City Festival! Applications are available now for resident girls entering the 3rd & 4th grade (Little Miss) and 11ht or 12th grade (Miss) in the fall at the center or you can download one here!

The annual Tom Nowak/Big Creek Run will be held on Sunday, May 13 (Mother's Day) at 9 am...click here for registration details!

Youth Classes

Youth Fitness Classes

Tae Kwon Do

The first-time student should sign up for Tae Kwon Do, the art of self-defense using the hands and feet. The instructor is a fourth-degree black belt and is committed to focusing on the individual needs of each child. There is a uniform cost. Please register with instructor at the center. Weight Training for Kids

This class is for boys and girls ages 12-14 who would like personal instruction on how to properly use our Nautilus and free weight equipment in order to continue work-outs thereafter without parental supervision. Kids must attend 1 month worth of classes starting with the first Saturday of the month. The fee is $10 for members, $15 for residents and $20 for non-members and non-residents.

Little Stars Gymnastics

This popular program is for girls & boys ages 18 months to 10 years old who are interested in learning the important fundamental skills of gymnastics. No prior experience is necessary! Activities such as balance beam, single bar, obstacle course & basic tumbling will be taught! The instructor, Sophia Boyk, allstargym@att.net, is a USAG safety certified gymnastics instructor with over 17 years of teaching experience. Princess Ballet Classes

Children will be introduced to ballet steps, terminology & the basics of dance in a warm, imaginative & fun atmosphere. Classes will be taught by a college graduate with a B.A. in Performing Arts. She is currently a dancer herself and brings many years of formal training and loves to teach kids! Our 3,300 square foot Fitness Area contains almost 100 pieces of the latest Nautilus and Stairmaster equipment, along with numerous Troy dumbbells, Cybex plate-loaded machines and free weights. We also have a "cardio-theatre" system for watching TV while you're working out and a fully staffed fitness desk, complete with an AED machine for your safety.

Fitness attendants are glad to "show you the ropes." Members may track their progress on individually designed "workout logs" available at the desk. We also have two certified personal trainers on staff to help you tailor your workout to your needs:

Adult Classes

Ultra Cycle 

This 45-minute class is a challenging, fat-blasting workout that will take you thru leg sculpting hills and speed & resistance interval flats. Intensa-Fit Ride

This challenging, high-energy bicycling class takes you on an indoor ride that consists of flat roads & hill climbs! Lead by a certified Spinning instructor; this fun, non-impact workout will push you to get in shape! The daily rate is $8 (if seats are available).

Combine fun and fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper body strength work using hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is offered for support, head to toe stretching, and complete relaxation in a comfortable position.

Kidszone

Kidszone Activities, Camps & Clubs

Our Kidszone Activities mission is to provide a wide variety of programs from toddlers through “tweens”. From academic to social programs, we provide a positive and healthy environment for today’s kids!

All classes are open to Non-Residents. Child must be required age by start of class. No refund or transfers after the first day of class. If approved by the Kidszone Director, before the first class: a refund or credit for future class (each with a $15 processing fee of the original total) will be deducted.

Signups for our 2012 Summer Camps begin Monday, March 26! We'll also have a number of Summer activities to choose. Click here for a complete description!

KidsZone registrations for Fall 2012 (including the very popular Kids Korner program) will begin on May 1st!

Saturday Sitters

Parents are permitted to drop child off for babysitting at "our house." Ages 3 & up are welcome to participate in 4 hours of fun offered to keep your child busy while you enjoy a night out! This activity includes gym, craft, movie and pizza party. (Must be potty trained to attend). ges 8 & up will swim during the 1st hour, parents must indicate if child is swimmimg upon registering for activity

Stay Safe, Be Safe

Friday Fun Nights

Hang out with friends, toss the football, shoot hoops, play volleyball, swim & play X-Box Kinect in the Rec Room. Pizza & drink will be provided during these 4 hours of fun monitored by staff. We will end the night with a movie if time permits! (You are permitted to bring extra money for the Juice bar but it is not necessary).

Day/Time: Fridays on April 13, May 11, June 8, July 13 from 5-9 pm in March & April and 4-8 in May, June & July

M.O.M.

Hey Moms (Dads & Caregivers too)! Do you need a social life too? Is your young child ready to socialize with other children with moms' assistance? "Moms of Middleburg" has been created to provide a place to bring moms together to socialize while their children play in a safe child friendly environment. Pack a lunch or snack and join us for Friday playgroups in our Kidszone Room, which will include a short story, simple craft & celebration of seasons. M.O.M. will also enjoy 1 FREE Monday Open Gym visit per month and 1 FREE visit to our indoor pool, date TBA. Enrollment fee covers 1 adult & 2 children.

Ages: Birth-5 years old

Baby & Me

Start building social skills with other children through exploration, song, movement & story time in our multi-purpose gym. Parent/Caregiver participation is required. Minimum of 8.

Open Gym for Runners/Walkers

Come play using all of our toys in gym! Parents can work out or relax in the center while their kids are busy at play. NO registration required - show up that day for activity. Please try not to arrive any later than 10:15 am. Child must be a proficient walker on their own. No class when Berea City Schools are off.

Wee World

Ready to start a little structured play for your toddler? This activity will provide both group and free play. Simple theme, craft and story will be provided.

Circle Time (Winter/Spring)

Get Going

Kids Korner - Winter/Spring 2012

Take advantage of a fun, safe structured environment for kids!!! Weekly themes, activity sheets, library & computer time. Child should be able to sit & listen to short story, conmfortable holding a writing utensil and can follow simple instruction. Child does not need to be potty trained --- the parent will be notified if bathroom assistance is needed. One, two or three day activity available. Just a few spots remaining for Winter/Spring 2012 session!

Ages: 2 1/2-5 years

Day/Time: Tuesday, 1/10-5/8, Wednesday, 1/11-5/9 and/or Thursday, 1/12-5/10 from 11:15 am-2:00 pm.

Numbers Club - Level 1

Does your child have a passion or interest in numbers? Need to review and refine number concepts? Addition and subtraction facts? This club will also have fun with numbers telling time and counting money. Class meets for 6 weeks. No class July 2-6!

Ages: 1st & 2nd grade

Day/Time: Friday, 6/22-8/3 from 11:15 am-12:15 pm

Numbers Club - Level 2

Does your child have a passion or interest in numbers? Need to review and refine multiplication and division facts (short & long based on ability)? Have fun. solving everyday lessons with numbers through play and word problems. Class meets for 6 weeks. No class July 2-6!

The Middleburg Heights Young Ambassadors

The Midd. Hts. Community Center is actively seeking the service of male and female students, ages 10-14. Have an interest in being a youth role model and representative in our city? Engage in a variety of service experiences, work with others, learn to solve problems and contribute to our community this summer.  "Represent" and show that today's youth are committed to making a difference. You must be a resident, member, attend a school in or have a caregiver residing in the city.

Ages: 10-13 years

Day/Time: Friday, 6/15-7/27 from 11:00-12:30 pm

Fees: $35 for members/residents & $39 for non-members/non-residents.


Southwest Safe Sitters

Is your "tween" ready to start taking on the responsibilities of babysitting? Southwest Safe Sitters presents a 2-day certification class for babysitting. Limit 8 per class. A variety of necessary skills including feedings, appropriate play, safety, identifying choking hazards and infant/child CPR will be presented. Class will be instructed by a certified instructor. A Southwest Safe Sitters Certificate will be provided upon completion of class. Please pack a small snack & drink.

Ages: 11-14 years

Day/Time: Tuesday & Wednesday, 6/12 & 6/13 or 8/6 & 8/7 from 9:00 am-Noon

Fees: $50 for members/residents & $57 for non-members/non-residents.


Jess' Dance Crew

Do you have a lot of energy and love to dance? Miss Jess will teach a choreographed routine combined with dance steps, turns & jumps needed to perform in just 6 weeks! Increase flexibility, improve rhythm & break a sweat with friends...boys and girls welcome! Attire should be appropriate and comfortable to move in. T-shirt included. The instructor, Jess Ballas, has been dancing for over 17 years now. She has studied all styles of dance and has taken classes all over the Cleveland area and in New York too! She has performed in countless dance recitals, competitions, shows and 6 performances of The Nutcracker. She is currently the choreographer for Midpark High School's Show Choir, "The Midpark Magic". Jess attends Kent State where she is studying fashion and dance.

Jazz with Jess- Level 1 & 2

Get together with friends your age and learn some basic dance steps. A simple routine to age appropriate music will be taught in just 6 weeks with a "performane" on the last day of class for friends and family. No special attire required. A t-shirt will be provided to be worn to each class.

Ages: Level 1: 4-6 years, Level 2: 7-9 years

Day/Time: Monday, 6/11-7/16 from 1:15-2:15 pm (Level 1) and from 2:15-3:15 pm (Level 2)

Fees: $35 for members/residents & $39 for non-members/non-residents.


Kidszone Summer Camp '12

Kids ages 5-12 can fill their summer with fun activities including swimming, indoor/outdoor play, games & simple crafts. Lunches and extended care available. We'll also visit the playground and explore other areas surrounding the community center!

Ages: Grades K-5

Day/Time: Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 9 am-2 pm (June 19-21, June 26-28, July 10-12, July 17-19 & July 24-26)

Fees: $45 for members/residents (2nd sibling $35) & $55 for non-members/non-residents (2nd sibling $45) per every 3-day session. An extended camp option until 3 pm is available for $10 for each 3-day session.


Kidszone Summer Camp '12 (Junior Counselors)

Are you looking for some way to gain responsibility while having fun this summer? Need to practice babysitting skills? Join this group and work directly with our younger campers. Help with crafts, gym time & lunch. Split your time with swimming and games. Free time in center will be monitored by staff. Lunch provided. Bring extra $ for snacks. Take a trip to Wendy's & library once a week!

Ages: Grades 6 & up

Day/Time: Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 9 am-2 pm (June 19-21, June 26-28, July 10-12, July 17-19 & July 24-26)

Fees: $16 for members/residents & $19 for non-members/non-residents.


Kidszone Child Care

The community center is happy to provide child care services to members and guests using the center. The Kidszone room is available for children ages newborn through 9 years.

The fee is $2 per hour. Each additional sibling costs $1 per hour (full hour will be charged regardless of the duration of stay). Punch cards valued at $20 can be purchased for $18 in The Kidszone Room. The parent/guardian must be physically in the center while the child is in The Kidszone area.

Hours for child care are:

  • Monday-Friday from 9:00 to 11 a.m. and 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
  • Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Child care is not available on Sundays.

How old do you have to be to use the fitness area?

Children between the ages of 12-14 will be allowed to use the Nautilus & Cardio equipment if they are accompanied and supervised by an adult or if they have completed the Youth Fitness Class held on Saturday mornings. No one under the age of 15 is allowed in the Free Weight area. No child under the age of 12 will be allowed on the track unless accompanied & supervised by an adult.

How many laps constitute a mile on the track?

Approximately 12 laps comprise one mile if you are in the outermost lane.

How long can I exercise on a piece of equipment?

During busy hours, we ask that you limit your time on a particular piece of equipment
to 30 minutes.
