Athletic Department

Larry Szymanski
Athletic Director

The Athletic Department offers programs that give every boy and girl in the community an opportunity to participate in team sports, regardless of skill level and physical capability.

Youth Baseball & Softball Registrations will be accepted beginning Thursday, March 1! Click on the following links for all the information you will need to sign-up (we don't have online registration, but feel free to print out a form, fill it out at your convenience and bring it in with payment)!

We also offer a variety of popular adult athletic programs such as bocce, volleyball, horseshoes, and cornhole to keep the parents active year round.

The 2012-13 5th Grade Travel Basketball Tryouts will be held on Wednesday, April 4 at 7 pm at Berea High School. This team will be formed in addition to Coach Vince Yee's "Orange" which will compete again in the lake Erie league "A" Division. Coach Blackwelder can be reached at jbblackwelder@sbcglobal.net

The 6th Grade Travel Basketball Tryouts will be held for both the "A" & "B" division on Sunday, April 22 at the Community Center at 6 pm. Coaches Mike Morsillo and Dan Kenney are the coaches.

The Rec. Dept. is considering adding additiuonal travel basketball teams for next season if there is sufficient interest. If interested in coaching, contact Larry Szymanski, at larrys@wowway.com, or call him at (440) 234-2255.

Adaptive Sports for Kids (A.S.K.)

Adaptive Sports for Kids (A.S.K.)

The A.S.K. Program is a uniquely designed Sports and Recreation program for children ages 10 to 18 with special needs. A.S.K. is an award-winning series of seasonal sports for children who are physically or mentally challenged, regardless of residency.

Since 1991, under the direction of Middleburg Heights Recreation Department staff, A.S.K. participants have been taught the fundamentals of sports, good sportsmanship and how to have FUN!

Thanks to the support of the Kiwanis Club, shirts are provided to each participant and an annual banquet/award ceremony and DJ dance is held for all participants and their families at no charge. This innovative program continues our commitment to provide sports-related activities to children of all abilities with the emphasis on fun and learning.

FAQs

Athletics FAQs

My child will not have reached the school grade or age required for a specific athletic program, but I think he/she is ready to participate at that next level. Can we sign up for that program?

If this particular program does not have a limit on number of registrations, you may sign up and attend evaluations for the program you wish to have your child participate in. Our staff will determine readiness.

Do you have to be a resident to participate in youth
athletic programs?

Most youth sports programs are open to Middleburg Heights residents, non-residents that have a "Legacy" membership and non-residents who attend a school located in Middleburg Heights. Some Programs are open to non-residents who reside in the school district if our neighboring cities within the district do not offer a similar program. Either check our website at www.middleburgheights.com or call the athletic director.

Can my child be placed on the same team with another for transportation purposes?

We get many similar requests, but we cannot guarantee placing children other than siblings on the same team. In fairness to all participants, our objective is to make teams as equal as possible. This request would be considered if, after evaluations, it is determined that it would have no effect on the parity of the teams.

Can I request to have or to not have my child on a team with a
specific coach?

We will consider such a request, providing there are more than 2 coaches in that particular program and doing so would not affect parity of the league. For example, if we have only 2 U8 soccer teams, we would not guarantee being placed with 1 or the other coach.
