Recreation Department

Summer is finally here! The outdoor pool will open on Monday, June 1st, the baseball & softball teams are playing, we have our concerts-in-the-park scheduled and of course, our big Summer in the City Festival will take place the last weekend in June at Southland.

Sometimes we place so much emphasis on programs and facilities that we neglect to talk about things that truly impact everyone who comes into our center.

1) Did you know we have 3 AED (automatic external difibrillators) machines in the Rec. Dept? Two are in the center itself and one is in our park gazebo. It has been proven that quick use of these machines help to save lives of heart attack victims! The department provides training to our staff on its use and over 80 of our staff are certfified in CPR and AED!

2) To help combat the many viruses that have surfaced over the years such as MRSA, Staph & Swine Flu, we have instituted an intense procedure of disinfecting all of our exercise equipment, restrooms and facilities on a daily basis with products specifically designed to destroy these viruses. We also encourage people to use the disinfectant gel stations that are all around the center.

3) All aquatics & tot room staff must undergo background checks and drug screenings. All other employees undergo background checks & random drug testing.

As you can see, the safety of our members and the cleanliness & sanitation of our facilities are priorities for us. We hope you and your family take advantage of our facilities & programs this summer!

Our Youth Dances (which usually sell out  are held on the 3rd Friday of every month from 7-10 pm during the school year (Sept. thru May). We'll be taking a 3-month break but will return in the fall. Tickets always go on sale the Friday prior to the dance. $4 for members & $9 for non-members.

The city will now be the sponsor for all of our Adult Dances. For a complete 2009 schedule, click here or stop in at the center & pick one up! Of course, the whole family is invited to our Summer Concert-in-the-Park series that will be held on the following Sundays from 6:30-8:30 pm at the Gazebo: July 19 & August 16.

Sign-ups began May 1st for all of our summer activities such as Tot Tee Ball, Youth Tennis, Cavs Basketball Camp, Cheerleading Camp, Youth & Adult Bocce Ball Leagues, Tot Day Camps & Extended Day Camps, Tot T-ball, Little Stars Gymnastics Lessons & Camp, Funutation Computer Camp, KidzArt Camp, Young Rembrandt's Camp, Adult Horseshoe League, Adult Coed Volleyball League & the annual KidsSummer Club (daily afternoon activities open to ages 9-14 featuring basketball, water volleyball & open batting off the pitching machine.

The 2009 Miss Middleburg Heights Pageant will be held on Saturday, June 27th at 7 pm at the Summer on the City Festival !! (not at the center as in years past). A large cash prize is available for the winner! We have a record 11 contestants who have applied!!!

We continue to grow our Silver Sneaker program (www.silversneakers.com) for seniors in certain insurance plans. This program has grown to over 1,000 participants in just a little over 2 and 1/2 years!  We have added many FREE exercise classes to our daily schedule, including a water exercise class called "SilverSplash" on Mondays & Fridays from 2-3 pm. If your insurance doesn't provide SilverSneaker benefits, you can still join some of these classes for just $1 per class! Information on this and all of our programs is available on this website or by calling us at (440) 234-2255. To read a great news article about this program from the 2/27/09 edition of the NewsSun, click here.

In our continuing effort to keep everyone informed of activities in the Recreation Dept., we now have an E-newsletter that will be sent directly to your inbox whenever we have news you can use! You may email steved17@wowway.com to sign up! Just put the word "newsletter" in the subject line and you'll begin receiving updates immediately!

Don't forget to circle the weekend of June 26, 27 & 28 so you can make plans to attend the SUMMER IN THE CITY FESTIVAL at Southland Shopping Center (Smith Rd. between Pearl & 130th)! We'll have rides, games, booths, food, the Miss Middleburg pageant, live music & FIREWORKS! All of this kicks off with our city parade on Friday, June 26 at 7:00 pm!
